Our History
When NZCTA was founded in 1981, doing business in China was unfamiliar territory for many New Zealand companies. The association quickly became a vital platform for networking, information sharing, and supporting early trade missions. It played a key role in introducing New Zealand exporters to Chinese markets and connecting newcomers with seasoned China hands.
Over time, NZCTA built a reputation as a trusted business voice and a conduit between government and industry in both countries. We have established close working relationships with key agencies and helped shape policy discussions by representing the commercial realities of our members.
As the bilateral relationship has matured, so too has NZCTA. Today, our members reflect the diversity and depth of this partnership—from long-standing exporters and SMEs to major Chinese conglomerates investing in New Zealand.
We are proud of our role in this relationship over the past four decades—from pioneering missions and celebrating achievement, to welcoming inbound delegations and helping shape the next generation of New Zealand–China engagement.
Looking Ahead
China is New Zealand’s largest trading partner and a key driver of economic growth in the Asia-Pacific. While many New Zealand businesses have found success in China, there remain significant untapped opportunities. NZCTA is committed to helping members navigate the path forward by providing a platform for connection, celebration, knowledge sharing, and advocacy.
